What Country Is This??

October 22, 2008

From Alexander Bolton at The Hill (thanks to Digby for point this out):

“Police departments in cities across the country are beefing up their ranks for Election Day, preparing for possible civil unrest and riots after the historic presidential contest.

Public safety officials said in interviews with The Hill that the election, which will end with either the nation’s first black president or its first female vice president, demanded a stronger police presence.

Some worry that if Barack Obama loses and there is suspicion of foul play in the election, violence could ensue in cities with large black populations. Others based the need for enhanced patrols on past riots in urban areas (following professional sports events) and also on Internet rumors.
Democratic strategists and advocates for black voters say they understand officers wanting to keep the peace, but caution that excessive police presence could intimidate voters.”

So let’s just be clear about this. On Election Day, we’re expecting the largest black voter turnout in American history. So we’re going to flood the streets of black neighborhoods with cops and make every black neighborhood look like a checkpoint in the West Bank. At the same time, we already have Republicans making calls and putting up fliers warning black voters that if they have outstanding warrants or parking tickets they could get arrested at the polls (take a gander one of these fliers here). But this is all fair game, because these people could riot…if the guy currently ahead by 8 points were to inexplicably lose.

So I reiterate: what country is this???
