Alaska: WTF??!!

November 6, 2008

Seriously, Alaska must be the most dysfunctional state in the Union, populated by complete nutbars. Is there any other explanation for this?:

“Convicted of seven felony counts just nine days ago, Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska held a narrow lead on Wednesday in his bid for re-election, though the race remained too close to call.
Mr. Stevens, 84 and a 40-year incumbent, led his Democratic challenger, Mayor Mark Begich of Anchorage, by fewer than 3,400 votes with more than 55,000 absentee, early and questioned ballots remaining to be counted. If he wins, Mr. Stevens would be the first felon elected to the United States Senate.”

Remember, this is the place where PALIN HAD AN 80% APPROVAL RATING.

BTW, I have heard this compared to James Michael Curley winning an election from prison. First of all, I’m not one to thing that comparisons to Curley should be considered in any way flattering. Second, Curley’s election was in 1904, and I’d like to think that we’ve come at least a little ways from the political conditions of Boston, Mass. in 1904. Third, and perhaps most importantly, Curley’s election was to the Board of Aldermen, not the UNITED STATES SENATE (although, in fairness, Curley would later go on to hold higher offices, including Massachusetts Governor; also, he was elected governor 30 years after the prison incident). Fourth, Curley was 30 years old, not 84. And fifth, Curley was in prison for taking the civil service exam for postman for someone else – not exactly commendable behavior, but certainly a lesser deal than Stevens’s 7 felony charges. But again, I’m not defending Curley, just pointing out the complete insanity in Alaska.
