Red [State] Dawn?

January 21, 2009

From Talking Points Memo:

“‘We have to have a remnant of the Republican Party who are recognizable as freedom fighters,’ [US Senator Jim] DeMint said. ‘What I’m looking to do as a conservative leader in the Senate is to identify those Republicans, and even some Democrats, and put together a consensus of people who can help stop this slide toward socialism.’

Says JF, ‘The first Republican member of Congress who cries “Wolverines!” on the House or Senate floor has to be considered the front-runner for the 2012 Iowa caucus.'”

Really gotta love the Red Dawn reference. Thank God for Ronald Reagan – if he didn’t tell Gorbachev to tear down that wall, that movie could’ve become a documentary. My favorite exchange from that classic 1984 film:

Col. Andy Tanner: …The Russians need to take us in one piece, and that’s why they’re here. That’s why they won’t use nukes anymore; and we won’t either, not on our own soil. The whole damn thing’s pretty conventional now. Who knows? Maybe next week will be swords.
Darryl Bates: What started it?
Col. Andy Tanner: I don’t know. Two toughest kids on the block, I guess. Sooner or later, they’re gonna fight.
Jed Eckert: That simple, is it?
Col. Andy Tanner: Or maybe somebody just forget what it was like.
Jed Eckert: …Well, who *is* on our side?
Col. Andy Tanner: Six hundred million screaming Chinamen.
Darryl Bates: Last I heard, there were a billion screaming Chinamen.
Col. Andy Tanner: There *were*.
[he throws whiskey on the fire; it ignites violently, suggesting a nuclear explosion]

Wow. Powerful stuff. Whatever happened to C. Thomas Howell anyway? I haven’t seen him since the early 1990s.
