Hoover Was Right??!!?

February 1, 2009

Astoundingly, one of the GOP talking points lately has been that New Deal did not work. Right-wing CFR fellow Amity Schlaes has now taken this a step further by arguing that not only did FDR fail, but he actually made the economy worse. She even pushes the counterfactual: had the United States restrained spending and done nothing, the market would’ve solved all our economic problems on its own. In other words, Herbert Hoover was on the right path, and the election of Roosevelt was the real economic disaster.

I know, my head hurts, too. This is only one rung of the ladder up from Ann Coulter’s argument that McCarthy was right.

So where, you may ask, was such a scandalous, idiotic screed published? Some obscure right-wing blog? The Weekly Standard? The National Review?

THE WASHINGTON FUCKING POST.

Berkeley economics professor Brad DeLong rips the post apart on his blog. He also points out that this is the same Washington Post that published:

— Right-wing economic genius Donald Luskin arguing that the fundamentals of the economy are sound on…wait for it!…September 14, 2008!:

Quit Doling Out That Bad-Economy Line: Things today just aren’t that bad. Sure, there are trouble spots in the economy, as the government takeover of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and jitters about Wall Street firm Lehman Brothers, amply demonstrate. And unemployment figures are up a bit, too. None of this, however, is cause for depression — or exaggerated Depression comparisons. Overall, the pessimists are up against an insurmountable reality: In the last reported quarter, the U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of 3.3 percent, adjusted for inflation. That’s virtually the same as the 3.4 percent average growth rate since — yes — the Great Depression.”

Incidentally, the US economy SHRANK to the tune of 3.8% this past quarter, and it’s bound to get worse next quarter.

Charlotte Allen, who argued that negative stereotypes against women that have been used to oppress half the population for centuries are…lo and behold!…true:

“[Women] shriek and swoon and gossip and…[should] not mind the fact that way down deep, we can be…kind of dim.”

Yet, according to Forbes, WaPo editorial-page editor Fred Hiatt is one of the leading LIBERALS(!!) in this country (this is the same Forbes list that counts self-identified conservative Andrew Sullivan, who supported George W. Bush in two elections, as a liberal because he’s openly gay).

God protect us from teh stoopids.
